The Zayed National Museum in Abu Dhabi, designed by Foster + Partners, is set to be a striking new landmark. The museum’s five sculpted “wings” not only look impressive but also help cool the interior naturally. Unveiled in 2010, the museum pays tribute to the UAE’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, showcasing his love for falconry and Islamic art.
The museum’s design revolves around a 98-foot-tall mound, mirroring the UAE’s desert landscape. The steel wings, varying in height from 83 to 123 meters, rise seamlessly from the building, drawing similarities to the New Library at Magdalene College. These wings act as chimneys, using the thermal stack effect to push hot air out and draw in cool air through lower-level vents, which then circulates through cooling pipes before entering the lobby.
Inside, a large atrium flooded with natural light keeps the space cool. The upper level houses four pod-like galleries at the base of each wing. The museum will exhibit ancient marine fossils, Aramaic coins, historical weapons, and contemporary cultural artifacts. A landscaped garden will showcase key moments from Sheikh Zayed’s life, providing visitors with a diverse look into the UAE’s heritage.
